NYSTCE 095 – Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS) Practice Test

The mention of main verbs and linking verbs highlights two distinct but essential types of verbs in the English language. Main verbs are the primary verbs in a sentence that convey the main action or state of being. They are crucial for constructing meaningful sentences and indicating what is happening or who is performing an action. Linking verbs, on the other hand, serve as connectors between the subject of the sentence and additional information about that subject. They do not express action but rather link the subject to a subject complement that describes or identifies it.

For example, in the sentence "She is a teacher," the verb "is" is a linking verb that connects the subject "She" with the noun "teacher," providing information about her identity. Understanding these two types of verbs is fundamental for grasping how sentences are constructed and how different verbs function within them. The distinction between action and linking verbs aids in deeper comprehension of sentence structures and the roles that verbs play, making it vital for language learners and instructors alike.
